The Mitchells: Five for Victory
paperback
B&N
|
This book, first published in 1945, introduces the Mitchell family with five children. Their Grandmother also lives with them in Washington, D.C. Near the beginning of the book their Father leaves to fight in World War II.
They plant a victory garden, do odd jobs to earn war stamps, make friends with a war refugee nearby, and take in a boarder so they don't have to let the cook go.

Canadian Summer
paperback

|
In this book, the war is over, there are now six children and Father has returned and found a job in Montreal. He has not found any house to rent for the family so they have remained in Washington for a year.
The book begins as the family heads off to live in a ski cabin in Canada for the summer, while Father commutes on the weekends from Montreal and continues to hunt for housing.
The cabin is extremely rustic: no electricity and no running water, but it is in the middle of nowhere with a lake just outside their door.
It is an idyllic summer punctuated by good deeds, which eventually lead to a happy resolution of their problems.

We have not read this book, but it is the final Mitchell's book. Several years have passed, but they are still in the house they were able to rent at the end of Canadian Summer,
and two twin boys are born, bringing the total to eight children.
